Completed project: a panelled feature wall in Aurora

The homeowners in Aurora had an empty alcove that did nothing for the room, and an idea: a built-in feature wall with real dimension to it. Not a flat accent colour, but a panel-and-batten design with a bold geometric pattern that would catch the light and give the space a focal point. Feature walls are our favourite kind of job — a big visual change for a small footprint.

The scope of work

We planned the layout to fit the alcove exactly, then built the wall in MDF — vertical battens combined with a large diagonal, chevron-style pattern. Getting a geometric design to look intentional is all in the setting out: the angles have to be consistent and the pattern has to sit centred in the space. Every joint was filled, sanded and caulked for a seamless, built-in look before paint.

Painting and finish

Once the woodwork was filled and sanded smooth, we primed and painted the whole wall a soft grey-blue in a single, uniform colour so the pattern reads through shadow and light rather than through contrasting paint. Painting the panelling and the flat wall the same tone is what gives it that architectural, built-in effect.
