1. Who we are
VOL Handyman ("we", "us", "our") operates a marketplace that connects homeowners and businesses ("Clients") with independent service providers ("Pros" and "Students") in the Greater Toronto Area, York Region, and Simcoe County. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect and handle personal information in compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable Ontario law.
2. Information we collect
From Clients: name, email, phone number, service address, job details and photos, payment information, communications with Pros and our support team.
From Pros and Students: full legal name, contact information, postal codes served, government ID or student ID (where applicable), photos of work, insurance/licence details, banking information for payouts, signed agreements, and timestamps and IP addresses of those signatures.
Automatically: device information, IP address, approximate location, pages visited, and cookies necessary to keep you signed in and to operate the service.
3. How we use your information
- To create and manage your account and verify your identity.
- To match Clients with appropriate Pros or Students.
- To process bookings, payments, and platform commissions.
- To send transactional emails (booking confirmations, status updates, receipts).
- To investigate complaints, prevent fraud, and enforce our Terms.
- To improve the platform and develop new features.
4. Who we share information with
We share personal information only as necessary to operate the service:
- Other users: When you book a job, the assigned Pro or Student receives your name, address, phone, and job details. Conversely, Clients see a Pro's public profile (name, photos, reviews).
- Service providers: Our backend (Supabase) and email delivery providers (Resend) process data on our behalf under contract.
- Legal: When required by law, court order, or to protect rights and safety.
We do not sell personal information.
5. Cookies and analytics
We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember preferences, and measure usage. You can disable cookies in your browser, but parts of the site may not function.
6. Data retention
We retain personal information for as long as your account is active and as required to provide the service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements. Booking records and signed agreements are retained for at least seven years for tax and liability purposes.
7. Security
Personal data is stored on managed cloud infrastructure with encryption in transit and at rest, role-based access controls, and row-level security policies. No system is perfectly secure; you are responsible for keeping your password confidential and notifying us of any suspected unauthorised access.
8. Students under 18
We accept Student applicants aged 16 and over. Students under 18 confirm during signup that a parent or guardian has reviewed our Terms with them. We collect only the information necessary to verify age and to operate the matching service.
9. Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of your personal information, and to withdraw consent for non-essential uses (such as marketing). To exercise these rights, contact us at the address below. We will respond within 30 days.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated by email or via a notice on the site. Continued use of the service after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
