Completed project: a laundry room plumbing rough-in in East Gwillimbury

The best time to get a laundry room right is before the drywall goes on. This East Gwillimbury project involved roughing in a new laundry area — the washer supply, the drain and vent, and the dryer duct — all set neatly into the framed wall so the finished room would be clean, recessed and trouble-free.

The scope of work

We mounted a recessed washing-machine outlet box with quarter-turn hot and cold valves between the studs, so the hoses and shut-offs sit flush in the wall rather than sticking out behind the machine. Then we ran the black ABS drain and vent piping through drilled studs to the right heights and falls, and set the flexible dryer duct — all pressure-checked and lined up before the wall was closed.

Why the rough-in matters

Everything you never see in a finished laundry room is decided at this stage — whether the machine sits flush to the wall, whether the drain runs quietly, whether the valves are easy to reach. Getting the heights, falls and blocking right now is what makes the finished room work for the next twenty years.

What a laundry rough-in costs

  • Add or relocate a washer box on an existing wall: $300–$700
  • Full laundry rough-in (supply, drain, vent, dryer duct): $800–$2,000
  • New runs across the house or through finished walls: quoted on inspection

Distance to existing supply and drain, and whether walls are open, drive the price. Every rough-in is quoted after we see the layout.

Why hire a professional

  • Drain and vent pipes need the right fall and venting or the machine drains slowly and the trap gurgles.
  • A recessed washer box has to be set at the right height and blocked solid before drywall.
  • Getting the rough-in right the first time means never opening a finished wall to fix it later.
