Completed project: repainting soffits, fascia and eavestroughs on a two-storey home in York Region

The roofline is the part of a house nobody looks at until it starts to look bad. On this two-storey brick home in York Region, the soffits, fascia and eavestroughs had faded and gone dull, and against the red brick the whole upper edge of the house looked tired. A fresh coat of dark paint along the roofline is one of the quickest ways to make a home look newly maintained, and it protects the surfaces underneath at the same time.

Painting the roofline from a ladder

The soffits and fascia sit high on a two-storey house, so the work is done from a properly set extension ladder, one section at a time. We use a roller on an extension pole to lay down an even coat across the soffit and along the roofline, which gives a smoother finish than brushing and keeps the work moving along each side of the house.

Good exterior paint work starts before the paint goes on. Dirt, cobwebs and loose, flaking paint are cleared first so the new coat has something solid to grip, and surfaces are masked or cut in carefully where the dark roofline meets the brick, the white window trim and the shingles.

Why the roofline is worth repainting

  • Soffits and fascia take sun, rain and freeze-thaw cycles all year, and faded or peeling paint is the first sign the surface is losing its protection.
  • A fresh finish seals the surface and helps stop moisture getting into the wood and trim behind it.
  • A dark roofline frames the brick and the windows, and lifts the look of the whole front of the house.
  • It is one of the best-value exterior touch-ups before listing a home or after buying one.

Fall is a good window for this work. Days are still dry enough for paint to cure properly, and the roofline gets refreshed before winter weather hits it.
